The Moselle Valley – Moseltal – Moseldalen

The view from Grevenburg Castle over the river Mosel

The Moselle Valley, or Moseltal in Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany, is a popular valley for caravans. It has a lot of campsites along the route, you can drive short destinations and experience a lot.

Koblenz, the starting point of our trip through the valley

It’s situated in the western part of Germany and reaches from Koblenz to Trier along the river Moselle/Mosel. The river twists and turns through the valley, along castles, small villages and among steep hills with wineyards as long as the eye can see. As it gets very warm her it is a perfect area for making wine, and doing some wine tasting! The river Mosel flows all the way from Col de Bussang in France, through Luxembourg, to Koblenz in Germany.

Koblenz

We started in the city of Koblenz, where the river Mosel ends in the north. There is a campsite with walking distance to the city, with new sanitary facilities, good place for emptying tanks and toilets and a small restaurant. It is overlooking the river Rhine as it connects with the river Mosel. On the other side of the river you can find Germany’s biggest military fortress, Festung Ehrenbreitstein and the memorial of German Unity, Deutshes Eek.

Koblenz has a variety of malls and restaurants and a beautiful promenade. We were there in 2018 during the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia, when Germany played against Mexico! The match was shown in multiple big screens close to Deutsches Eek and the excitement and the atmosphere was amazing to be a part of! To bad for Germany it ended 0-1 to Mexico. The Mexican guy didn’t seem to mind 🙂

From Koblenz you can travel both Mosel and Rhine river

Mosel valley is a beautiful curved valley. Small villages, ruins and castles occurs as you pass through the wineyards alongside the boats on the river/canal. For those who might be worried about the capacity for caravans: Don’t think about it! They pop up like dandelions in the summer! If it is stellplatz (parking place for caravans) or campsites, there is a lot to choose from! There was a lot of available spots in mid June.

Campsites along the route

There are a lot of cozy small towns along the valley, such as Cochem with the beautiful Cochem Castle and Alken with Burg Thurant. We went for a walk in Pommern, 3 km south of Treis-Karden, along nice buildings, vines, the river and a train station. There are wine outlets along the river where you can buy wine produced in the area. The valley of Mosel produces some really good wine! Moselle wine or Mosel wine.

Mosel river has several dams with locks to regulate the water, and the boats have to pass through them. Fascinating to look at!

Next stop was Traben-Trarbach

We stayed at a small stellplatz right pass the centre, below the gas station. Only 12 euros for 24 hours, including electricity and free shower. Perfect with 24h then we could use both days there without removing the caravan early in the morning. The facilities was a relatively new container solution with two toilets and two showers. There were small fences between the pitches making it extra cozy. You don’t need fancy facilities to have a great stay.

After breakfast we jumped on the bikes and went to Grevenburg Castle Ruins. With a not so good route in Google maps but adventurousness (didnt check other maps) we went via a walking trail. The places the route wasn’t steep, it was very narrow, and at the end there were a lot of stairs. At least we got some good exercise! The view was great and there was both ruins and a monument. The ruins was really neat, to bad I only had the phone as a camera.

There was a road all the way to the monument and the ruins which was the logic way back down! But it was a memorable way up 😉 We celebrated the beautiful day with ice cream looking at the great architecture of the town.

Trier

After driving along the river we ended up in Trier, the end stop of the valley of Mosel. The river Mosel continues. Trier is a large beautiful city, with lots of statues, monuments, shopping centers, stores, restaurants and cafes where you can sit outside. We decided to go to Trier in stead of one of the small places along the valley because I had to get a camera. Luckily there was a photo store that had the camera I wanted! (The camera wasn’t available in Koblenz.) We had lunch on a cafe in a big open space.

Lunch and shopping in Trier

There are both stellplatz and camping site in Trier. At the stellplatz you pay for the electricity you use, and a fee when leaving the site for the time you’ve stayed there, pros. The cons is the sanitary facilities. The Camping site on the other side of the fence has good sanitary conditions, neat and tidy with a shower where you only pay fort the time you use the water, and you could turn it of an on as you would. Genius concept! Wish more campsites could have the same!

We have saved a lot of beautiful small places along the valley of Mosel, as we intend to come back! The valley has a charm and a calming vibe making it impossible not to relax and enjoy. Definitely wort a visit!
